HOLISTIC HEALTH
SHAYLA GARLAND
Naturopathic Doctor
Dr. Shayla uses a variety of holistic modalities and testing to diagnose and treat the root cause of disease. Dr. Shayla's focus in practice includes (though is not limited to) energy, stress, digestion, and autoimmune disease.
-
Dr. Shayla discovered Naturopathic Medicine when she was 15 years old, and immediately knew it was her path, resonating with it whole-heartedly.
After years of dissatisfaction with the un-holistic approach of conventional medicine for her own health concerns; knowing in her heart that chasing symptoms (instead of addressing root cause), disregarding the mind-body connection, and using synthetic chemicals to "heal" her body was not the right path, Naturopathic Medicine was a glorious discovery! Dr. Shayla then studied Life Sciences at McMaster University, and then spent another 4 years at The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in order to pursue this path. Treating her fellow humans with Naturopathic Medicine is the most beautiful, satisfying thing she can imagine doing with her life.
Amongst her schooling and beyond, she craved knowledge about, and connection with, humanity and the earth. Thus, she spent years backpacking solo- from Latin America to Asia to Africa. She learned so much and truly gained a worldly perspective and appreciation. To unite her love for Naturopathic Medicine with her love for the globe and the people in it, she travelled to Haiti to work with Naturopaths Without Borders, and founded the chapter at her college.

-
Janine (she/her) is a registered traditional Chinese medicine practitioner (TCM) who practices acupuncture and prescribes Chinese medicinal herbs. She holds a BSc in Food, Nutrition, and Health and is completing the doctoral program in Chinese medicine. She focuses her practice on supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ folks and disordered eating, body image, mental health, sleep conditions, fatigue, digestion, and gynecology. Janine uses various techniques, including Japanese acupuncture, a gentle approach that relies on palpation to help diagnose and treat conditions, and non-needle therapies, such as cupping, gua sha, and Chinese massage. She gravitated towards East Asian medicine because it’s grounded in a mind-body-spirit connection.
Janine has education, training, and experience with intuitive eating and disordered eating. As someone who has suffered from eating disorders and mental health challenges, she brings her lived experience into the clinic space through compassion and empathy. Janine adheres to weight-neutral and Health at Every Size® principles, which means all bodies deserve proper care. Her main philosophy is creating a brave, gender-affirming environment, believing that patients are the experts of their bodies, searching for the root cause, and developing customized treatments.
Janine acknowledges that she practices an ancient medicine that is not a part of her ancestry and is committed to unlearning ways that uphold cultural appropriation. She’s grateful for her teachers and the practitioners who paved the way for this medicine to exist today. As a settler, she is learning what it means to have unearned privilege and how to honour being a guest on the Unceded Traditional Territory of the K'ómoks First Nation, the traditional keepers of this land.
